Used Forestry Equipment
Many logging operations are small, family-owned establishments. This can make purchasing forestry equipment a somewhat intimidating task. Slashers, skidders and bulldozers do not come cheap and, even though most small operators buy used equipment, they need it to function for a long time in order to pay off the investment. Finding this equipment at a good price can be daunting. The equipment is very reliable which means that auctions will generally be full of very dated equipment which has been in service for many hours. Though this may not seem advantageous, the reliability of this equipment does offset the age of what's usually on the market.
Used logging equipment can generally be found at auctions held by government agencies. While the equipment they're selling may be somewhat dated, one can usually be reasonably certain that it has been properly maintained. Fleet vehicles tend to have a cadre of mechanics to service them which means that the manufacturer-recommended servicing schedule has usually been followed. It also means they've usually been used by properly trained individuals which tends to eliminate any concerns about the equipment having been 'beat' during the course of its work. This can add a sense of security to one's purchase.
Other sources of used forestry equipment are individual loggers themselves. This has advantages and disadvantages. One may well be able to get a very good price on this equipment. If the logger happens to be hanging up their hat and leaving the business, this may be even more the case. However, there is no guarantee that the business in question knew how to maintain their fleet or, if they did, if they were willing to spend the money required to do so. Remember that equipment can look good on the outside and still be about ready to have a catastrophic failure. Make sure any equipment purchased from an individual is inspected thoroughly before putting down any money.
Used forestry equipment can provide years of service at a significant discount to the owner. One will have to give it extra attention, however, and will have to ensure that it's inspected and maintained diligently. Especially during the first few months of service, keep an eye out for any problems that may be manifesting. They may not be obvious when the equipment is purchased, but equipment which has seen a great deal of use is inevitably more subject of failure and must be properly maintained.
