Like many pieces of industrial equipment, a generator set is a complex item. It involves mechanical and electrical components and, thus, it oftentimes requires mechanics with several specialties to service. These devices can have a very long service life but they do need to be maintained diligently. They're oftentimes used in very trying conditions, particularly at construction sites, where dust can foul the engines and where moisture is constantly attacking the electrical components. One must make proper mechanical and safety inspections before putting any money toward purchasing such a device.
An electrical motor generator set must first be of adequate capacity for the job where one intends to put it to use. For the largest jobs, smaller generators not only will be pushed to their performance limits, they may well pose a hazard. Remember that one is not only dealing with mechanics with these devices. Electrical components are very sensitive and, if they weren't properly maintained over the service life of the generator, they can cause disasters. One must make particular efforts to ensure that all of the insulating materials and devices on the generator have been maintained before purchasing these devices for the safety of their crew.
The motor on these devices will have definitely been put through its paces. These motors tend to operate at the same speed for many hours which is a taxing affair for any engine. They may also have been improperly maintained as these pieces of equipment are easy to overlook at a job site until they actually break down. Make certain that one is given the maintenance paperwork when one purchases these machines. Not doing so can end up in the purchaser taking home a very sophisticated paperweight and little else.
It's best to have the generator set inspected by both an electrician and a mechanic. While most mechanics will be able to assess the general condition of the electrical components, it takes a professional to catch the very minor electrical problems which may soon develop into serious catastrophes. Oftentimes, contractors will cut corners by having their mechanics work on projects that aren't in their realm of specialization. A generator set is a good example of this. The electrical components should have been maintained by a qualified electrician rather than a mechanic as this ensures that all the various elements related to safety were properly considered. Where electricity is concerned, there is no room for error.
