Of all the industrial equipment used at job sites, the Caterpillar track crawler loader is among the most complex devices to maintain and to use. These pieces of equipment require regular maintenance and, given the amount of hydraulics involved, the expenses that can be incurred for track maintenance and the amount of fuel consumed by the loader, it makes sense that one should have both qualified operators and mechanics on staff or-if they cannot be retained by the company directly-at least readily available if something should happen to go wrong with the vehicle.
Government regulations and insurance companies require that anyone who operates a crawler has the requisite hours of training on the equipment. While these vehicles do present a danger to structures and other equipment if the operator is not up to snuff, the dangers they possess to other personnel are much more serious. An accident involving a loader is almost certain to result in an injury and, in most cases, a severe injury. When one is dealing with a vehicle which encompasses so many tons of gross weight and which has such a complex drive mechanism, the correct training is imperative.
Likewise, mechanics need to be qualified to work on all the various parts of these machines. Companies like Caterpillar, one of the largest manufacturers of loaders, have very complex designs and, aside from being a qualified diesel mechanic, any maintenance person should have experience working on the company's specific machinery. These machines are very heavy and changing parts in and of itself can be a dangerous affair. While a self-trained mechanic may be suitable for general gasoline engine repair, a crawler always needs a certified and experienced diesel mechanic to ensure that work is done properly and safely.
At the work site, the environment must be kept safe when these devices are in use. The operator of a crawler has very limited visibility and, if other workers are not on their toes, injury and death can easily result. It's best to have a safety consultant visit the site and provide training to the operators and laborers. This not only ensures compliance with any laws which apply but also ensures that the workforce is given the proper tools to ensure that accidents are kept to a minimum and the very worst-case scenarios can be avoided altogether. There is no substitute for having the right kind of training where a crawler is concerned.
